Unit 2: Relationships
Artist: Mary Cassatt
PORTRAITURE: PRINTMAKING: Using Stamps, construction paper, a printed image, and acryllic paint I created a piece to capture the loving relationship I have with my six-year-old golden retriever, Tucker.
Artist: Rene Magritte
SURREAL JOURNEY POSTCARDS: COLLAGE: Abby, Kristin, and Ashley worked together to complete these collage post cards. I wrote one card to my brother, Mike and the other to my boyfriend, Andrew. I used relationships by working collaboratively with my peers and writing to people who I have a close relationship to.
Artist: Do Ho Suh
POP-UP HOMES AND HABITATS: MIXED MEDIA: In this piece I made a ranch-styled home using red and blue, which are colors for the United States and Croatia, which relates to my identity. I used palm trees because I love warmth and included my dog, Tucker, made out of beads, pipe cleaners, and cotton balls because my home is where Tucker is!
Unit 2: Relationships Reflection
The Cassatt, Magritte, and Suh pieces that I created are all related to the big idea of relationships in different ways. The Magritte piece was my favorite because it symbolized the relationship I have with my dog. Tucker is slightly in front of me; as Band discusses (2000) “as soon as two objects overlap, the overlapping object “takes the space of the covered one” (p. 86). Since Tucker is so important to me, I wanted him to be the focal point. In the Magritte studio I worked collaboratively with my peers. This collaboration allowed me me to “work with people and be inspired by people” (Pink, 2006, p.72). I was able to take elements I did not see or consider initially and create something strange and visually intriguing. Additionally, the home I created that was inspired by Suh used the relational construct of what is a ‘home.’ I included a representation of my dog and made a house that used colors connected to my American and Croatian background because these attributes related to my idea of a home.
I would love to use any of these visual arts activities as integrated pieces in my classroom. I think I could use the Magritte activity at the beginning of the year to help students get to know each other. I think this introductory activity would help students collaborate in an interesting way using artistic expression. The post card they write could be to their teacher they had the previous year! I would like to use the Suh activity in conjunction with geography and have students work in groups to make houses and then place them in a formation and generate a map of the houses. The students could also add other buildings to their map and create them, too!
